Boomer vs. Millennial: Industry veteran, college intern share perspectives on the workplace
We’re continuing our Boomer vs. Millennial series with insight from two very different Progress Lighting team members – which we learn today – have surprisingly similar workplace experiences. If you haven’t already, be sure to take the time and meet Ian and Tae.
Both Ian and Tae learned about Hubbell and Progress Lighting through advice and guidance from an outside mentor. Ian jokingly shared that he promised himself he’d never go into sales – until a Progress Lighting salesman got to him, that is – and sold him on the position. Ian was chosen out of a pool of what he described as “more experienced candidates” because of his enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
Tae shares that same enthusiastic attitude – having first heard about the internship through a business mentor at Bob Jones University. “The growth, brand portfolio and capacity of Hubbell attracted me to the company,” said Tae. “Learning about trends in the industry, and how technology is driving those trends, excites me.”[/su_column] [/su_row] [su_row] [su_column size=”1/1″]
Building Brand Awareness
Tae shared that he has been intrigued by how Progress Lighting’s social media channels and online strategy serve as a distinct competitive advantage for the brand. His favorite part of the job (so far) has been participating in a photo shoot at a Toll Brothers home used for the brand’s consumer-facing commercial (now running on HGTV), as well as the Illuminate the Moments that Matter advertising campaign.
It’s projects like these that Ian shares have been one of the biggest and most impactful changes to the brand he’s seen over the years.
“Progress Lighting is, and has been for more than a century, one of the strongest, most well-known lighting brands among trades and the industry. However, from a consumer perspective, there has been very little brand recognition,” noted Ian. “With the influx of internet advertising, consumer-facing campaigns, our presence in big-box retailers and showroom advertising – that perception is largely changing.”[/su_column] [/su_row] [su_row] [su_column size=”1/1″]
Ian and Tae both noted how Hubbell and Progress Lighting’s team atmosphere has been an encouraging and motivating factor to each of their positions.
“I’ve never been in this kind of environment,” said Tae. “People [at Hubbell] are so nice and respectful. It’s very different coming from a military background that is dominated by a fast-paced, no-questions-asked culture. Here – there is an open-door policy, and I’ve found that someone is always willing to take the time to help me learn and solve challenges.”
Ian also shared that the inviting work environment has greatly impacted his own, personal job satisfaction. “Within the company, it’s a family atmosphere. I have people who have been working for Progress for 35, 25, 20 years,” said Ian. “People really want to help other people. All you have to do is ask.”
