FIXTURE-TO-HOUSE PROPORTION FOR OUTDOOR FIXTURES

When searching for decorative outdoor fixtures, it’s important to think beyond the design and finish of a product to make a selection based on the fixture’s size in relation to your home.

It can be difficult to choose lighting online, or even in-store, without knowing what size fixture you need to have a significant, but not overpowering, presence on your home’s exterior. Today we’re sharing a few details to pay attention to as you search for the perfect lighting to enhance your curb appeal.

Begin by measuring the height of your front door to keep outdoor lighting in proportion to your entryway.

Many homeowners make a mistake of selecting exterior lighting that is too small – these fixtures will lose impact instead of enhancing curb appeal. Your outdoor lights should measure 1/4 – 1/3 of the size of the front door.

Position Guidelines:
Don’t overlook the height of the fixture itself, as this is another important aspect when it comes to sizing proportions. Keep lights positioned at eye level, with the center of the light source measuring 5.5 to 6.0 feet from the ground. Mount your exterior lights 8-10 feet apart.

Post and Fence Lighting:
Choose larger fixtures for fence and post lighting, to keep visibility from a distance.

Garage Lighting:
Follow similar guidelines for garage lighting, selecting fixtures that measure ¼ to 1/3 of the height of the garage door. Choose your quantity and mounting height based on the size of your garage door.

For example, one outdoor light may be sufficient for a one-car garage, while a two-car garage may be well suited with a fixture on either side.
