Homebuyers under the age of 35 have seen a lot in their time: the expansion and recession of the housing market as well as the rebuilding of the economy. Millennials have waited longer to buy their first home than previous generations, but the tables are turning. It’s no wonder then, when it comes to home buying this group has strong opinions about what design elements should be included.

According to 2015 John Burns consumer research data the majority of first time homebuyers under the age of 35 consider the following design must-haves when buying a new home:

After living in apartments and/or rental housing with usually only one living area, it seems most millennials are looking for “a place for everything” when deciding where and what to now buy.

Today’s first time homebuyers are very savvy when it comes to shopping and selecting finish options. With exposure to seemingly endless sources of design inspiration, the ability to personalize a new home is non-negotiable. From the larger design decisions like deciding on a floorplan, to details like selecting a lighting style, having options is favorable with the millennial home buying audience.

Many millennials are willing to trade a bigger yard for the potential to have an outdoor entertaining space. Whether purchasing a townhome or a traditional, single family home, millennial homebuyers are looking for opportunities to maximize their living space both inside and out.
