Shining a light on top kitchen island trends

The kitchen island concept has greatly evolved over the last decade. As the kitchen itself has transitioned from an area primarily for preparing food to a key room for entertaining, so the kitchen island has changed. It has become a key centerpiece and “hub” to kitchen life. As a focal point to kitchen design and functionality, news styles and materials of kitchen islands have also entered the spotlight. Additionally, lighting is being used in new ways to highlight this important piece.

Sustainable Living

The green design phenomenon has not missed kitchen islands. More homeowners and designers desire an island made of sustainable materials. As with lighting, crafted looks with reclaimed elements are  high on the trend report.

Multi-Level Designs

Kitchen islands with multiple levels are also popular, allowing for different tasks to be performed on countertops simultaneously.

Multiple Islands

Since islands have high functionality for entertaining, larger homes are opting for two or even three islands. One can easily be used for meal prep, while another can display appetizers and hors d’oeuvres for guests.

Pop of Color

Contemporary spaces that feature bright colors often use the kitchen island as a focal point with an accent or complementary color in the design.

Pendants

From a decorative stand point, pendants are the most popular option for above-island lighting. Homeowners love the wide range of pendant styles to cater to their personal decor scheme. We’re seeing a trend towards bold, oversized and statement pendants in kitchens with tall ceilings. Larger pendants may only require two fixtures to cover the space – while in other applications, you could use up to four mini-pendants to illuminate the full length of an island.

Chandeliers

Glam is in.  A pair of decorative chandeliers can provide a unique and dazzling option to light up kitchen islands. We’ve noticed that chandeliers are making their way into all sorts of new rooms of the home – and kitchen islands are reaping the benefits of these beautiful accents!

Linear Fixtures

Linear fixtures are a great option for kitchen islands as they are designed to distribute light across a horizontal surface. Like pendants and chandeliers, linear fixtures come in a range of design options offering the homeowner a variety of choices for a light focal point.
